The Ministry of Natural Resources is considering a ban on plastic trays

The Russian Ministry of Natural Resources has proposed a ban on the use of plastic food trays (so-called "korreks") by 2030. The ministry suggests replacing them with biodegradable packaging that can be composted together with organic waste.

According to Deputy Minister Denis Butsaev, this initiative aims to improve recycling efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste. He explained that plastic trays are rarely recycled because they’re often contaminated and difficult to separate from the general waste stream.

Additionally, starting September 1, 2025, the production of colored and multilayer PET bottles will be banned in Russia. The Ministry is also planning to restrict the use of polystyrene packaging, which is difficult to recycle and dispose of in an environmentally friendly way.
